A patient with mild keratoconus, characterized by a cone-shaped distortion of the cornea, faced additional challenges due to a highly astigmatic sclera—the white part of the eye known for its irregular shape in such conditions. Traditional contact lenses failed to accommodate the “lumps and bumps” inherent to his eye’s structure, leading to discomfort and suboptimal vision.

Our solution was to design a custom scleral lens specifically contoured to his unique ocular topography. Scleral lenses are advantageous in such cases because they rest on the less sensitive white part of the eye, vaulting over the cornea without touching it directly, thus providing enhanced comfort and protection for the eye’s delicate tissues.

The patient’s experience with the custom-designed scleral lens was transformative. Not only did it fit comfortably over the irregularities of his eye, but it also provided him with clear, stable 20/20 vision. This improvement in vision quality significantly enhanced his daily activities and overall life quality.

If you’re experiencing vision issues due to keratoconus or irregular astigmatism, a custom scleral lens might be the key to achieving both comfort and crystal-clear vision. Reach out to explore how we can tailor a visual solution perfectly suited to your needs.
